Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Tertius Oculus
Tertius Oculus is a nom de plume I created to be able to share my thoughts and writings without linking my personal views of life directly to any of my businesses or other online projects. This site is a personal project for me.
What does Tertius Oculus mean?
The literal translation from Latin for Tertius Oculus is third eye. Not “the third eye” (that would be Tertium Oculum). The word tertius can also be translated as scribe and oculus as sight, so roughly translated tertius oculus could also mean a writer who sees.
Why is your profile avatar missing an eye?
This is based on a drawing I did many years ago of the Norse god Odin. In his own personal quest Odin sacrificed his right eye – willingly – in exchange to quench his insatiable desire for wisdom and knowledge.
Who is Odin?
Odin is the chief god in Norse mythology, who lost his eye in a quest for wisdom. The story goes that he sacrificed his right eye at Mimir’s Well, a source of knowledge and wisdom, located at the roots of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. In exchange for a drink from the well, which would grant him profound knowledge, Odin willingly gave up his eye.
Couldn't Odin heal his eye?
Perhaps he couldn’t or perhaps he could and chose not to. The loss of his eye symbolizes the sacrifices one must make for wisdom and understanding. In many myths, the act of giving up something genuinely valuable is irreversible, highlighting the theme that true knowledge often comes at a great cost. Odin’s missing eye serves as a reminder to us all of his relentless pursuit of wisdom and his willingness to endure personal loss for greater insight and understanding.
